This Sunday I had an opportunity to shoot a little behind the scenes footage on a music video for Lior Molcho. Lior is a very talented director and VFX artist who directed two music videos for our mutual friend Kyle Puccia. The first video, ‘Message’, was shot just before I shot my first music video on the Canon 7D, ‘Broken People’. It is a great and uplifting video that I watch whenever I feel down. The most recent, ‘Save Me’,  is a video that is comprised of green screen footage, miniature modeling and a lot of VFX work. He even gives us a little video peak into ‘the making of Save Me’.

He also works with an amazing Cinematographer, Danit Sigler. The shoot was not only a great opportunity to meet them, but I was also excited to see Danit’s completely portable SI-2K set-up which I had read about on her website. Lior was gracious enough to take a little time to walk me through their set-up.

The camera, an SI-2K Mini is a 2048 x 1152 resolution camera head that records in CineForm RAW, which Danit has modified to record directly onto a Mac Mini, which is all accessed by a touch screen monitor that mounts directly to the rig. The monitor is the camera view finder, but also allows her to adjust the camera settings, view playback and one of the most awesome features allows you to take a screen grab and overlay it over the current image coming from the camera so you can match up different effect plates to the shot you are about to take. Unbelievably helpful when you are doing green screen effects. All of this is powered by a “Mikegyvered” V-lock battery and mounted onto a Zacuto rail system. This is the gist of what I got out of the quick tutorial that Lior gave me, but I am certain that there is a lot more to the puzzle. You can check out her rig more thoroughly on her website.

I was very happy to have a chance to finally see their rig, watch them in action and I look forward to seeing what they come up with. The footage that I shot will likely only be seen in Isreal, but from what they explained to me about the music video it’s going to be pretty epic, dancing water, lights, the whole shabang. Can’t wait to see it.
